7 Things to Prepare Before Renovating Your Home

A smooth home renovation almost always starts with good preparation. Before you contact a designer or contractor, it helps to think through a few things so conversations stay focused and the budget doesn't spiral.

1. Define the goal of the renovation

Do you want more space, to fix damage, or simply a fresh look? A clear goal helps set priorities, especially when the budget is limited.

2. List your needs and your wants

Separate the must-haves, such as an extra bedroom for the kids, from the nice-to-haves, such as a kitchen island. This list is invaluable when you have to make trade-offs on cost or space.

3. Set a budget range, including a contingency
